Christmas carols at
bupa nursing home
We would like to thank everyone who sang Christmas Carols at BUPA Nursing Home. We aren't the best singers in the world but we did get a lot of enjoyment "entertaining" the residents of the home.

BRIAN WALTERS
spoke to us about the 2nd Boer War 1899-1902 on the15th of December It took place in the area, which is the current location of South Africa. 23,600 Australians served in the Boer War.1000 died, half from sickness. There were six VC’s awarded to Australians. 43,000 horses were sent from Australia. The NSW Lancers fought in numerous battles there. The English were caught by surprise. They had no plan. After the tenth month it became a guerrilla war. The British had no reliable maps and they were guarding extensive lengths of railway lines. Brian’s talk was well received and of great interest as shown by the number of questions. Frank Dearn |
Our speaker on the 8th of December was PDG Harold Sharp, District 9685
Membership Chairman.
He spoke to us about Membership Acquisition and Retention
Membership Chairman.
He spoke to us about Membership Acquisition and Retention
This week we had the pleasure of having PDG Harold Sharp and DGE Gina Growden at our club. Gina gave a short
overview of her background and huge involvement in Rotary for the past years. I was on the RYLA board with her a few years ago when we were involved with that program. A highly motivated and organised person who will, I am sure, be a highly efficient and capable DG. Harold who has taken on the reins of 9685 Membership Chairman impressed me greatly when he spoke to incoming Presidents at the last President Elect training session. Even though I had been involved before I found his presentation basic, down to earth and realistic. Harold has been involved with Rotary for many years and clearly understands the changing needs of this organisation and the necessity to involve all members of each club in the membership drive to ensure the continuity of Rotary. Wear your badge and talk to people. Embrace our community and be aware of cultural differences. It is very important for us to encourage those of different backgrounds to become members, as we need them to become part of our community for the future. Ensure we encourage visitors and open our doors to encourage interest and understand what Rotary does locally and internationally.

high tea
Some pix from our High Tea at Faye's gorgeous home in Cremorne on Saturday the 22nd of November. The High Tea was a happy, “fattening” and most pleasant afternoon at Faye’ s home as we sat on the verandah taking in the view and eating far too much. Thanks Faye for sharing your home and your daughter, Tina, who looked after us far too well and thank you Neryl for your catering skills, which are always first class.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF LINDFIELD WILL BE HELD ON THE 1ST DECEMBER 2014 AT KILLARA GOLF CLUB.
our club assembly
Our club assembly provided the opportunity for all members to update our current situation in our service areas. While we are always pushed for t the main information was presented. Y outh is certainly very active and there are currently ideas for extending our involvement with Killara High School being investigated. The Menindee program is currently in progress with students from Killara High School having visited and found a severe drought in progress with the lake almost empty. The return visit is imminent so that the Menindee students can attend both the primary and high school but also the Schools Spectacular next week. Bruce is in constant touch with David Browne and will always provide information to the club as it comes to hand
KILLARA HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENTS HELPED LINDFIELD ROTARY AT A RECENT BUNNINGS BBQ We were advised at last night’s meeting that we were offered a cancellation BBQ at Bunnings Warehouse Chatswood this coming Saturday
We were very ably assisted by a number of students and some teachers from Killara High who worked very hard during the day. After another very slow start things improved, resulting in a net profit of $1,260.15. We reached a mutually satisfactory arrangement regarding a share of profits between KHS and Lindfield Rotary. The Killara High students were available and keen to raise funds for Vietnam-Cambodia orphanages and schools. The outcome was a quite successful result for a quiet Sunday which enabled KHS to exceed their goal. The benefits of this were clearly evident from their presentation to our Club last night. "NOTRE DAME ORPHANAGE" MONGOLIA |
The Javanese Sulphur Porters Indonesia |
My courier has taken 4 boxes of knitted squares up to the Notre Dame Orphanage in Ulaanbaatar. My courier's husband, a mining engineer, is leaving Mongolia in October, so the timing has been good to complete this project. As winter is coming the orphans will be warmer once the International women's group sew these together and distribute them.
I want to sincerely thank all my knitters for their hard work - well done. We have knitted all the balls of wool, which were purchased by Lindfield Rotary so the project is now finalised. |
My courier has taken 3 boxes of clothes up to our Bali contact Heinz for distribution to the Sulphur Porters of East Java. Heinz takes a truck across the Sunda Straits several times a year. For these people who have little, I know all donations are gratefully received.
This is Lyn Osman, Co-ordinator, signing off from my two Rotary projects. |

DR TIM SHARP
is one of Australia’s leaders in the new science of positive psychology and happiness. He is one of this country’s leading Executive Coaches and a highly qualified consultant on matters relating to human behaviour and psychology.
Tim described the so-called “Blue Zones” in the world (e.g. Okinawa and Sardinia) where people lived long and healthy lives. People in Blue Zones kept active, ate natural foods (unprocessed foods), had a diet rich in vegetables and fruits and were “connected” to their families, social groups and community. Tim reported that of the many outcomes of the 70-year Harvard Study on longevity, to love and be loved was a standout predictor of a long and happy life. Being connected to one’s partner, friends and social groups provides the positive state of mind that is associated with happiness and longevity. Indeed Tim stated that optimists live, on average, nine years longer than pessimists. Studies show that diet plays an important role in longevity. Food is so plentiful in our society that we all tend to overeat. In some cultures the philosophy is to eat only until 80% “full” whereas in the western world we tend to eat to 120% “full” and consume too much processed food. So, for a long and happy life, the studies show that we should stay active; stay connected with loved ones, family and friends; maintain a positive/optimistic state of mind; and eat natural (unprocessed) foods, a high proportion of which should be fruit and vegetables.

lindfield, st ives and turramurra rotary clubs combine to remove graffiti
On Saturday August 9th St Ives, Turramurra and Llindfield Rotary clubs spent 2 hours water blasting and painting out graffiti at St Ives on Stanley Lane. We had approximately 18 support people from the 3 clubs. David Morris was my main support.
We also provided a BBQ for the locals and created a lot of local interest. We cooked about 50 sausages which we provided free of charge to the St Ives people. 2 local councillors came along. Christiane Berlioz especially made a great contribution and she was impressed with our undoubted ability to clean the graffiti.

Promoting Peace
Today, 42 million people are displaced by armed conflict or persecution. Through Rotary’s partnerships with several leading universities, Rotary Peace Fellows develop the skills to strengthen peace efforts, train local leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and support long-term peace building initiatives in areas affected by conflict. Rotary provides up to 100 peace fellowships per year at the Peace Centres This is an important international program and worthy of significant fund raising efforts by Rotarians. The calendar year 2015 will be a huge year in Australia, New Zealand, France and Turkey and no doubt many other countries. From the conflict in Europe during the First World War, the spirit of ANZAC emerged with its human qualities of courage, mateship, perseverance and sacrifice. These wonderful attributes continue to have meaning and relevance today in the development of our national identity and the continuing close relationship we enjoy with the New Zealand people. |

DICK WHITAKER spoke to us about "Droughts and Flooding Rains" Rainfall Variability in Australia”. Here some of the major droughts and floods recorded since European settlement are reviewed. The disastrous Federation Drought of 1895 to 1902 devastated rural Australia and was followed by “Fishers Little Drought” during 1914 and 1915. At the other end of the scale widespread flooding across eastern Australia during the 1950’s produced chaos through the Hunter Valley and adjacent inland areas. Subsequent skill in forecasting these events has steadily improved in the following years”. Dick is Chief Meteorologist with Sky News Weather in Australia and appears regularly on radio and television. He is very interested in meteorological history and education, particularly through television, radio, and books, and has been author, co-author and consultant editor of seventeen books about the weather, including publications for Time-Life and Reader’s Digest. He also wrote an historical coffee table publication on the photographic history of Sydney called “Sydneyside” and has written thirteen published mathematical papers. |

LINDA ZHANG
Following is an excerpt from Linda’s letter to Bruce)
I would like to thank you especially for the very kind introduction you gave, and for always making me feel extremely welcome. Everybody was so friendly and knowledgeable and I gained so much just from the dinner tonight. It means so much to me that you believe in my capabilities to contribute positively to society, because it’s that empowerment which others give that make all the difference for young people like me.
I really look forward to getting furthered involved in Rotary through RYLA and Rotaract next year when I turn 18. They sound like incredibly exciting programs which I would love to partake in. Moreover, it was fantastic to hear about Lindfield Rotary's involvement with Killara High School, and I hope to stay updated with Killara's initiatives.
Thanks so much again, for all the support you have given me. It truly means a lot and I am extremely grateful to you and Lindfield Rotary Club
President Yvonne with Linda Zhang and our Hugh

Daffodil Day was a cold and wet morning, but as always, the troops turned up. We had about 12 Rotarians working at the Lindfield railway station from 7-9am. As always, we got a strong response from the local residents as they waited to catch their trains to work or school. It was especially pleasing was to note the large number of young people who supported such a good cause by purchasing the cancer council merchandise.

Tim Becker, Chair of the Australia – Vietnam Resource Group Inc. Nui Dat Kindergarten Project The NSW Committee has been active since 2007. Its focus is supporting educational needs in the Ba-Ria Vung Tau Province of Vietnam. Our main project has been the refurbishment and reopening of the Nui Dat Kindergarten. The two classrooms originally built by AVVRG needed a kitchen, dining room and children’s toilets to be added to make it suitable for long day care. It is now a fully functional kindergarten and a showpiece of cooperation between AVVRG and the local community of Nui Dat, the site of the Australian Task Force Base during the Vietnam War. AVVRG works closely with the Union of Friendships Organisation who supports the work of NGOs by liaising with the local Peoples Committee representatives. All new initiatives start with determining the particular needs of the community. A Memorandum of Understanding with the Peoples Committee is then agreed which outlines the scope and timeframes of the project and the roles and responsibilities. This strong governance model ensures that the project will meet the needs of the community and the funds raised have maximum impact and are not wasted. Mike Pailthorpe |

THE FUN RUN
The Lindfield Rotary Fun Run 2014 was held on Sunday 6 April from 8.00am to 11.15am at Roseville Park, Clanville Rd, Roseville, 2069. This family fun run was lots of fun for young and old. When I looked through my photos I noticed that everyone was smiling.
Our team had to work through a number of showers to deliver one of the most successful runs to date. It was a record year, with 2,142 registrations. It was such a relief that all the runners managed to complete their runs and receive their prizes in fine weather.
You really must visit www.lindfieldrotaryfunrun.org.au and view the results which are there for all to see. To view this, just click on the 'results' button. There are various categories with heaps of information for age groups, male or female and distance.
For additional information it is a good idea to go to the Fun Run page on this website /the-fun-run.html
